Rezekne is an ancient city going back to the 9th century. The many churches of Rezekne reflect its history. Luthren reflecting the Swedish and German influence. Catholic reflecting the Polish influence. Orthodox reflecting the Russian influence. Once there were 11 synagogues and the town was 2/3 Jewish. Now there is only one old beat up synagogue and a handful of Jewish people. Nathan Horwitz who served in the Russian Army 1899-1901 and was sent off to fight in east. Read his story told by his younger sister. He married, had a family and stayed in Latvia.
